Sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies remain a significant problem. Development of new vaginal drug delivery systems to treat these is the focus of recent research. Friend reviewed various intravaginal rings (IVRs) that deliver a combination of drugs. Loxley et al. demonstrated development of ethylene vinyl acetate IVRs that contained various levels of the antiretroviral drug UC781 to prevent transmission of HIV-1 infection and the contraceptive hormone levonorgestrel to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
