Eastern Virginia Medical School and CONRAD released research that encouraged the use of biomarkers in vaginal microbicide trials in order to access the risk of sexual acquisition of HIV/STIs. The study also cited the fact that in vaginal microbicide trials, the act of having sex and the use of study products and condoms all affected the risk of acquiring HIV/STIs, and the biomarkers would help improve measurement ability in the field. The study concluded that resources and funding should be prioritized to biomarkers in vaginal microbicide research.
