Funding is geared toward moving highly promising leads through clinical trials for safety and effectiveness. This may include preclinical studies that contribute directly to the development of specific products. Basic research is not generally supported unless it is an integral part of a product development process. Limited short-term funding is often available, however, for pilot studies to determine the feasibility of novel and promising research approaches.
Priority areas for CONRAD funding are:
- Chemical barriers for women that prevent pregnancy and/or STIs
- Systemic methods for women and men
- Mechanical barriers for women
Projects in other areas may also considered for support, particularly those that would likely lead to increase contraceptive use in developing countries, such as developing generic products for distribution by public sector family planning programs at lower cost than trade-name products.
The CONRAD staff reviews progress on individual projects using financial and semiannual technical progress reports. The program as a whole is reviewed annually by CONRAD's Technical Advisory Committee, which consists of experts in the reproductive sciences, family planning, and women's issues.
