Dr. Doncel joined the faculty of EVMS in 1992. In addition to his role as Director of CONRAD's preclinical research program, he is also the head of the Sperm Biology and Contraceptive Research Laboratory and an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology at EVMS. The main research lines under Dr. Doncel's supervision are:
- Discovery and preclinical characterization of novel, anti-HIV, topical microbicides with and without contraceptive properties.
- Signal transduction mechanisms controlling sperm function - identification of targets for contraceptive intervention.
- Characterization of biological, molecular and genomic markers of vaginal inflammation - impact of microbicides and reproductive hormones.
- Cellular and molecular mechanisms mediating spermatogenic arrest in male contraception.
Dr. Doncel received his M.D. degree from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1983. After completing a Ph.D. program with specialization in reproductive immunology, he received postdoctoral training in the area of contraception and gamete biology at EVMS. Dr. Doncel has authored more than 50 scientific publications in the areas of microbicides, contraception, sperm biology, andrology and reproductive immunology. He is an ad hoc reviewer for several scientific journals and a grant proposal reviewer for national and international organizations such as CONRAD, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Andrew Mellon Foundation, and the Virginia Commonwealth Health Research Board. He is also a member of WHO's Biomedical Specialist Panel. Dr. Doncel serves as a consultant for NGOs and private institutions in the field of reproductive health. He has been a plenary lecturer and session chair in numerous scientific meetings of the specialty. He is currently the chair of the EVMS research committee.
